The BRB Winter Seasonal Competition: Igniting the Spirit of Winter in the Heart of Summer

As the heat of the summer sun beats down on the barley fields of rural Alberta, and the air is filled with
the melodies of buzzing bees and the scent of blooming flowers, a unique event is emerging—a
celebration of the upcoming winter season. Introducing the Winter Seasonal Competition, a unique
homebrew competition that aims to captivate the taste buds and inspire the homebrewing community.
Hosted by the Battle River Brewers, this inaugural competition promises to be an exciting experience.

As one of the smallest club in Canada, the Battle River Brewers may be small in size, but their passion for
brewing is mighty. Despite their modest numbers, they have become known as a force to be reckoned
with, consistently securing victories and acclaim at the largest brewing competitions across the country.
Their dedication to competitive brewing has solidified their reputation as regular contenders on the
hyper-competitive Canadian Brewer of the Year Circuit year after year.

“We may be the smallest club, but we are certainly the winningest per-capita in every competition we
enter,” shares Tony Orr, a devoted brewer and proud member of the Battle River Brewers Club. The Winter Seasonal Competition revolves around a single BJCP category, the Winter Seasonal Beer
(BJCP Category 30C), which serves as a canvas for brewers to unleash their creativity. Divided into four
sub-categories, including English, American, Belgian, and Other bases, the competition invites
homebrewers to explore the nuances and possibilities within the style.

“The Winter Seasonal Competition is our opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity that thrives
within the Canadian homebrewing community. It’s a chance for us to inspire fellow homebrewers to push
the boundaries of one single style, and create some exceptional winter seasonal beers” Orr added.
This BJCP-sanctioned event is expected to draw homebrewers from all corners of the nation to participate in this grand celebration of winter brewing. The Winter Seasonal Competition is not only a platform for showcasing brewing skills but also serves as a gateway to the coveted Brewer of the Year Circuit.

“Earning points for the Brewer of the Year circuit is a significant achievement for any homebrewer,” says
Mike Jackson, an enthusiastic brewer and long-time member of the Battle River Brewers Club. “The
chance to gain recognition within the brewing community serves as a powerful motivator. It’s an
opportunity to shine on a grand scale.”

With thousands of dollars in prizes at stake for a single category, sponsored by some of the biggest
names in the brewing community, the competition also raises the stakes and fuels the participants to brew the best winter beers imaginable.

As the clock ticks towards registration, excitement builds among the organizers, volunteers, and
participants. The Winter Seasonal Competition opens its doors on Christmas in July – July 25, marking a
symbolic start to the anticipation-filled journey that lies ahead. Registration will remain open until the cap
of 100 entries is reached or until mid-November. The early registration ensures that every brewer has an
opportunity to perfect their winter seasonal masterpieces.

“While the summer sun beats down on us, it’s the perfect time to start dreaming of winter’s delights,” Orr remarks. “The Winter Seasonal Competition allows brewers to explore the magical realm of winter flavors, creating beers that will peak in time for the festive Christmas season. It’s a chance to transport ourselves to a winter wonderland, even amidst the warmth of summer.”

Beyond the thrill of competition and the allure of prizes, the Winter Seasonal Competition is a testament
to the power of community and camaraderie within the homebrewing world. It provides a platform for
brewers to share their knowledge, exchange ideas, and forge lasting connections that transcend the
boundaries of competition.

“The Winter Seasonal Competition not only showcases individual brewing skills but also nurtures a sense
of belonging and mutual support,” Jackson explains. “It’s an opportunity to learn from one another, receive invaluable feedback from expert BJCP judges, and grow together as brewers. This event unites us under a common passion, creating a vibrant tapestry of creativity and friendship.”

As the inaugural Winter Seasonal Competition approaches, the Battle River Brewers await the moment
when they welcome the brewing community to celebrate the spirit of winter, immersing themselves in the
possibilities of winter flavors, aromas, and traditions. The anticipation builds as participants envision the
magic they can create in a glass, crafting beers that embody the essence of the season.

“The Winter Seasonal Competition really celebrates the artistry of brewing, encouraging homebrewers to
embrace a unique challenge and express their creativity,” Orr emphasizes. “It’s a chance to go beyond
the traditional boundaries, experiment with unique ingredients, and create winter beers that will transport
beer lovers to a world of warmth and wonder.”

So, as the sun shines high in the summer sky, take a moment to close your eyes and imagine the crisp
air, the snow-covered landscapes, the warm crackle of the fireplace, and the joyous festivities of winter.
Let the thought of winter seasonal beers tantalize your taste buds, urging you to explore the depths of
your brewing skills and creativity. The Winter Seasonal Competition beckons you to embark on an
extraordinary brewing adventure.

Prepare to immerse yourself in a world where winter flavors dance on your tongue and the satisfaction of
crafting exceptional beers warms your heart. The Winter Seasonal Competition is not just a
