At the start of the year, we did a members survey to get an idea of what our members wanted and to get a sense of whether we were working in the right direction. Events was something that was flagged to be somewhat important. Following the popularity of brewing events like big brew days in the U.S., we decided that we should have a day of our own to do something similar.
After consulting with the homebrew clubs, we decided to declare the first Saturday of every June a day to celebrating homebrewing in Canada—Canadian Homebrew Day. With less than two months notice to the homebrew clubs, we were pleasantly surprised when we had 22 events registered on our Google Maps with 12 homebrew clubs involved from seven provinces and a territory on June 1, 2019. We were even more pleasantly surprised when #CanadianHomebrewDay on Twitter and Instagram showed more posts from folks who didn’t register at all! Thank you to all who participated in Canadian Homebrew Day in the many different ways that you did. Be sure to mark next year’s Canadian Homebrew Day, which will be on June 7, 2020 (moved to the Sunday out of respect for D-Day this year).
